The most basic anatomy lesson will tell you that the female body is different from the male body. But it goes so much deeper than "males are taller" or "males are faster." I'm talking about how a wider female pelvis means that the femur (thigh bone) slants sharply inward toward the knee and creates a larger Q-angle (quadriceps angle). I'm talking about how the curvature of a female's lower spine is more pronounced and the lower three lumbar vertebrae are physically wedged together versus just the lower two in males. Or even how female muscle composition, with more Type I muscle fibers, means females are more efficient at burning fat for fuel and resistant to fatigue during endurance sports.

These are the types of differences that actually require specialized equipment, putting the female form first, otherwise athletes are more prone to injury. For example, female athletes are up to 8 times more likely to get ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears versus male athletes in the same sport. A wider pelvis and the sharper Q-angle causes a female's knees to naturally collapse inward during landing. A partial ACL tear can take 6 months to fully recover. And a full tear, requiring surgical reconstruction and intensive physical therapy, can take more than 12 months recovery time. For a young athlete in her prime, that could be a career ending injury.

Proper training is the best asset to prevent serious injury, but the right equipment is a very close second. Female centric footwear, like cleats and boots, should feature a narrower heel and higher arch to prevent internal foot slippage and provide better lower-limb alignment during sudden cutting movements. Structural braces that are custom-contoured to fit the wider female hip-to-knee slant can prevent the knee from collapsing inward. Female athletes deserve better than the leftover male equipment that has been dyed pink.

At Mirror Girl Sports, we strive to educate female athletes at all levels and provide access to the very best female-centric sporting equipment so you can perform at the highest level. Join our community and build this mission with us.
